The devil made me do it is a mixed documentay. Observation points were used to back up the realism of the event being documented and analysed , Also reconstructions of confessions were used for added dramatisation. This documentary used a formal voice over at some points narrating the subject

Themes;

This documentary was surrounding the murder of a nun in a small village in italy commited by three teenage girls. This documentary was questioning the medias influence of the murder especially Maryilon Manson as it was revealed that he was there icon. It was questioning marylins manson's powerful lyrics and how the media can effect a community.

Narrative Structure;

The begining of the doc is presented with a problem a nun has been murdered and the crime is yet to be solved from there the viewers can see that this documentary was unfolding and solving the murder of a nun. The middle was mainly around identifying the criminals this is involved chilling reconstructions of the actual crime itself and the confessions , reconstructions were shown as evidence to the back up the brutality and nature of the crime. To conclude the perpatrators were shown to be apologetic and expressed there remorse over the crime they commited. Two of the girls were sentenced but the youngest of the three was thought to be innocent. The town was shown that it went back to its original state and the crime was almost forgotten about.

Camera Work;

On the reconstructions of the crime cantid shots were used making us the viewers feel in the nuns position or as if we were looking out threw her eyes on the floor at the time , i feel this was a clever position for the camera to be in as it brings reality to the scene and also was quite detressing which created emotion. Also a birds eye view shot was used over the town which made it feel vunerable and as if there was a power of this town i.e the power that Maryilyn Manson had over the youngsters?. Camera work demonstrating Maryilyn Mansons power was shown threw low angle shots at his concerts which demonstrated the power he has over his fans also the fact he could be seen as a 'God' like figure. Also at the concert was a specialist who was analysising Maryilyns performance during this there was close up of her face showing her reactions and also demonstrated her power.

Mise En Scene;

The people being interviewd in the documentary were in there on home this made the documentarys seem alot less fake as they are in there own enviroment so they would feel comfortable in front of the camera and it would be less likely for them to play up to the cameras. The specialist that attented the concert was wearing red which means she was power dressing showing her importance and authority. In the concert many of Maryilyns fans were shown wearing dark makeup and clothes and giving the camera the finger imitating maryilyn which leads us to think did the girls murder the nun as another imitation.

Sound ;

Sound effects were used on the reconstruction of the nun being murdered this added to the distress and the impact of this scene becuase there was a heart beating noise bulding up tension and terror. Sound effects were also used through out to build tension mainly when the audience were supposed to feel something. There was digetic sounds at the interview natural sounds of screaming fans , maryilyns music and the interviews. There is also a music bed through out the documentary of religous music which matches one of the theeme's of the documentary.

Editing ;

Match on action shots where used at the concert moving with what was happening. Also cutaways were used which kept the audience interested and keep the documentary moving also for evidence. There was fast pace editing and slow paced at different points matching the feeling of the part that was being shot for example at the point where the nun was being murdered fast paced editing shots were used to add suspense.

Archive Material;

The archive material shown was from some of Maryilyn Mansons concerts also from some music videos which show him in strange costumes and mutilating his body. Photos from the trial were shown also and clips from the nuns funeral. Also a clip from another mass murder that is thought to be influenced by Maryilyn Manson.

Graphics;

There wasnt that much graphics used there was some when the person was being interviewed all that was said was there name and occupation on the bottom left of the screen the lettering was simple.
