Each Category is aimed at a target audience this is done so that viewings can rise as they know they are appealing to a particular audience. The audience for each of theese catergories are as followed
- Early morning - Workers and Children
- Day time - Housewives and Non-Workers
- Prime time - Everyone
- Night time - Students and Past the watershed rule
When considering what time a show should be put on the television theese categories are taken into account as of when the programme most suited to the audience should be shown. The idea of 'after the watershed' is basically when programmes that involve violence , scenes of a sexual nature and swearing they will be shown after 9pm.
When considering target audiences a terrestrial channel aims its programmes at a certain group of people. With viewing numbers being able to be controlled, the channel knows what applys to their audience and what doesnt. BBC1 for example is aimed at middle aged and middle class people however prime time slot programmes relate to everyone. Channel 4 aims to entertain mainly students, this is done by showing programmes more towards that age range in the night time slot. Channel 5 has been problematic it has tried to appeal to everyone, therefore the viewing numbers has been affected as programmes that dont appeal to the majority will affect this.

The percentage of repeats of shows from each terrestrial channel varies in its percentages this is includes ;
- BBC1 = 10%
- BBC2 = 20%
- ITV1 = 30%
- Channel 4 = 30%
- Channel 5 = 40 %
