Documentary Analysis ; The music Biz





Type of documentary;


The documentary was mixed it involved a variety of media including interviews with meatloaf because the documentary was surrounding him. Also this documentary had a voice-over and archive footage from some of Meatloaf previous concerts.


Theemes ;


The themes explored in this documentary was the marketing of a single and the goal of having it reach number one especially the christmas number one.


Narrative structure;
At the begining of the documentary were given information that creates dilemma with different points of reason.In the middle the problem is that too much money is being spent on one single and the industry are worried at the chance that it will result in them becoming bankrupt. The documentary concludes positive as meatloaf reaches number one.


Camera Work ;
Most of the interviews were done with relevant backgrounds enforcing what the interviwie was taling about they were also quite closeup showing the importance of the interview.However on shots from the red carpet there was alot of zooming when there could of been better camera angles it made it look quite unproffesional as the zoom's were out of focus. There were panning shots so you could see every member at the marketing meeting.


Mise en Scene ;
The documentary shown the making of meatloafs music video for ' I would do anything for love' it was very elaborate and the fact it was being shot in LA was emphaised with connoted the importance of the video. Also in the video he was talking about the character he had created but not just that is not the only character he plays as in the media he says the becomes different people depending on the mood for example he said in one magazine he was a doting father and in the other a recovering alcholic. There was also footage from celebrity functions ,award ceremonies and press confrences. This documentary was not only focused on meatloaf but also on the re-release of the single 'YMCA' from the village people and how important it is for there image to be recognised.


Sound ;
There was a non-degetic music bed throughout the documentary some of the music from Meatloaf and The Village People. In the press confrence there was digetic noise from discussion also digetic sound from the interviews and a narrator throughout the documentary. There were some sound effects used mainly to build tensoin for example a beating heart was used for emphasis of tension.


Editing;
Cutaway shots were used to stree what the interviwee was talking about they also it kept the audience gripped on the subject. It also included shot reverse shot from meatloaf to the director. Also fast pace editing was used to demonstrate contrast of opinions there was also the dissolve effect used used to break up shot.


Archive Material;
This documentary included a variety of archive material this mostly included music videos mainly from meatloaf as the documentary surrounded meatloaf. Archive footage was also shown from the grammy awards and also meatloaf performing.


Graphics;

When the interviwees were talking there was small writing underneath telling the audience who they are. Also at the begining a magazine cover graphic was used when the vox pops were being shown.
